Contents of the Talk

With the decline of traditional science journalism, scientists are increasingly required to communicate directly with the public. But how can we do this effectively when faced with time constraints and a polarized audience? This talk examines whether Generative AI (GenAI) can help scientists craft their scientific messages effectively and the advantages and pitfalls we might encounter in doing so.

Dr. Yael Barel-Ben David is a science communication researcher and practitioner, currently a research associate at KielSCN (since 2024). From 2020 to 2024, she was a scientist and founding director of the Citizen Lab, a partnership between MadaTech – Israel National Museum of Science, Technology, and Space and the Technion’s Faculty of Education in Science and Technology, advancing citizen science and participatory research to strengthen ties between science, museums, and the public. Since 2018, Dr. Barel-Ben David has also taught science communication workshops and advised researchers, doctoral candidates, and research-based founders. She earned a PhD at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (2015–2020, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Ayelet Baram-Tsabari), following an MSc in Science Communication (2012–2015) and a BSc in Biology and Philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2007–2010). Her work has been recognized with a Minerva post-doctoral fellowship (2024), Teacher’s Assistants Excellence Awards (Technion, 2023; Hebrew University, 2012), and additional competitive grants and honors, including the PoC EITFood grant (2021) and the Technion Jacobs Award (2020).
